Bow to the First Order: A Review of the LEGO® Star Wars™ First Order Star Destroyer™ (75190)

I’ll be honest: I know that the Star Wars Sequel Trilogy is divisive among the fans. I understand that. There are some aspects of those films I didn’t care for, but I won’t get into that here. What I will say is that there were other aspects of the films that I really liked. The ship designs are one aspect that really stood out to me. Some of the designs were classic and little more than a pallet swap (X-Wings and TIE Fighters). Other designs were inspired by prior era ships but altered slightly. One of those designs was for the Resurgent-class First Order Star Destroyer. I’m a huge fan of the Imperial-class Star Destroyers. Outside of the Millenium Falcon itself, I can’t think of another ship design that just screams “Star Wars”.

The First Order Star Destroyer clearly was inspired by the Imperial-class but had enough changes to not be completely derivative. It looked like what you would expect a similar craft would look like after 30 years of technological advancements. Similar but different. The First Order Star Destroyer is hands down my favorite ship design of the Sequel Trilogy. When I saw that LEGO® had a First Order Star Destroyer (75190), I was intrigued. The result is an intricately designed recreation of an iconic starcruiser.

Design & build

The LEGO® Star Wars™ First Order Star Destroyer™ is a massive set. Inside the box you’ll find 11 numbered bags containing 1,416 pieces. Don’t let the size of the build or the number of pieces intimidate you, though. This set is graded for ages 9-14. However, the build is engaging enough for older or more experienced builders to enjoy as well. It’s also worth noting that younger builders may need some help with some of the more intricate parts of the building process. I’d put the difficulty level around the same as the Imperial AT-AT Walker.

True to the LEGO® reputation, the instruction manual is clear and easy to follow. The design of the First Order Star Destroyer is sleek and angular. From the hull to the surface paneling to the interior, the attention to detail is evident.

features & playability

One of the highlights of the First Order Star Destroyer is its array of interactive features. The set includes side-firing stud shooters, a working elevator, and several rooms for the crew. The set also has a carry handle, and the entire structure opens to reveal the interior of the Star Destroyer.

Of course, a kit this size is going to come with more minifigures than normal. There are five minifigures plus two droids, for a total of seven characters. Included in the set are Supreme Leader Snoke, a First Order Officer, First Order Stormtrooper, First Order Stormtrooper Sergeant, and a First Order Shuttle Pilot. The droids included are BB-9E and a First Order Medical Droid. There are plenty of opportunities with this set for imaginative play, whether recreating moments from the films or creating your own adventures in the Star Wars galaxy.

Once completed, the First Order Star Destroyer also makes a great display piece. Its size and design make it stand out as part of a collection. It makes for an impressive focal point for a showcase of your collection.

conclusion

The LEGO® Star Wars™ First Order Star Destroyer™ (75190) delivers a blend of design and playability. The set offers a rewarding building experience and is perfect for play or display. Whether you’re a seasoned collector or a novice builder, adding the First Order Star Destroyer to your LEGO® collection will be a decision you won’t regret.
