Few ships are as synonymous with Star Wars as the X-Wing. Designated the T-65 X-Wing Starfighter, the ship formed the backbone of the Rebel fleet. After the Galactic Civil War and the toppling of the Galactic Empire, the X-Wing would become the backbone of the New Republic Fleet. Some of the best pilots in the galaxy were known to fly the X-Wing for the Rebellion. Biggs, Wedge, and Luke Skywalker were probably the most famous of the Rebel pilots to fly the X-Wing.

The X-Wing Starfighter is part of the Ultimate Collector Series. As with the other sets in the collection, the X-Wing is intended as a display piece. While not overly complicated, the build is intended for those with more experience under their belt. As is the case with many of the other display pieces from LEGO Star Wars, the X-Wing comes with a placard showcasing in-universe facts about the legendary starfighter.

The design of the X-Wing is nothing less than you’d expect from the Ultimate Collector Series. The coloring of the bricks captures the various tones of whites, greys and reds as seen on screen. Of course, the best feature of this display piece is the ability to adjust the wings. Should you choose, you can set the wings to flight or attack positions, adding to the fun of having it in your collection. Of course, there are two minifigures that come with the set: R2-D2 and Luke Skywalker (in his flight suit). R2-D2 can be added to the starfighter behind the cockpit, and Luke can be placed in the cockpit, adding more realism to the model.

The X-Wing is intended as a display piece, and the construction is sturdy enough for that purpose. The starfighter is also large, making it a great centerpiece. The finished model is roughly 22 inches (that’s 55cm) in length, making it quite the jewel of the fleet. Just be sure you have the space to display it.

A stunning piece on its own, an aftermarket LED light kit is the perfect way to dial the display value up to 11. It’s not required, of course, but many of these sets in the Ultimate Collector Series don’t hit their full potential without them. This is one piece that I absolutely recommend a light kit for.

The build process is what you’d expect from a set this size. The X-Wing has over 1,000 bricks, after all. The Ultimate Collector Series sets are all intended for those 18 and older. However, that’s not to say younger builders can’t enjoy the X-Wing. The instructions are clear, as expected from LEGO, and the build process is quite smooth. However, those who are younger or less experienced may want to check out a smaller X-Wing for their collection (such as the Luke Skywalker X-Wing found here).
