BEEP BOOP BEEP: LEGO Star Wars R2-D2 75379 Review

Star Wars has long been one of the most marketable franchises in the history of entertainment. One could argue that it’s been THE most marketable. The toyline that accompanied the runaway success that was A New Hope essentially created the entire action figure industry as we know it today. Of all of the imagery from A New Hope, and from the Original Trilogy in general, that was slapped on a lunchbox and marketed, the most recognizable is R2-D2.

There was a time when R2 was THE face of Star Wars merchandise. Heck, I even had a life-size R2-D2 clothes hamper when I was a kid. So popular were R2-D2 and C-3PO that they even had their own animated series (1985’s “Droids”). The popularity of R2-D2 is something that is not easy to recreate. Don’t get me wrong, I love BB-8, but he’s no R2-D2.

LEGO has made several R2-D2 sets of varying piece counts and difficulties over the years. Each set needs something special about it to make it “pop”, and the LEGO Star Wars R2-D2 75379 has something in particular that sets it apart from even the more expensive LEGO R2-D2 set.

The model’s design is impressively accurate for its size and captures the droid’s iconic look.

As with many of the LEGO Star Wars 25th Anniversary sets (such as the Boarding the Tantive IV set), this R2-D2 comes with a display placard that showcases in-universe details of everyone’s favorite R2 unit. Included with the placard is an R2-D2 minifigure. Speaking of minifigures, what sets this R2-D2 kit apart from the more expensive, higher piece count version is the inclusion of a special guest minifigure: Darth Malak. The main villain from Knights of the Old Republic is such a cool addition to any collection and is hard to pass up.

Of course, no LEGO set of a droid would be complete without LED lights. While this set does not include its own lights, there are several aftermarket LED light kits, such as this one, that can improve an already impressive aesthetic.
